Dr Peter Vardy, toured Australian cities during May 2017.  The topic was A GRAND DESIGN Science, Ethics and Religion in Dialogue.

the BEST excursion we have ever been on”  Year 11 girls, PLC Pymble

These events are designed to extend and enrich the curriculum for senior students; they do not duplicate the content or the style of normal lessons, but offer a taste of life at university in a form that most students find stimulating, engaging and inspirational.  Short lectures packed with film-clips, illustrations and real-world examples are interspersed with “buzz” activities, a whole-group discussion and a formal debate, giving opportunities for students to interact with each other and with Dr Vardy.

Sibford_School_vardyDr Peter Vardy was vice-principal of Heythrop College, the specialist Philosophy and Theology College of the University of London, from 1999-2011 and has a passion for engaging young people with the big questions that affect them. One of the founders of Dialogue Australasia Network, Peter has been running the biggest conferences for senior students of Religious Studies in the UK since the 1990s as well as numerous student events and teacher PD across Australasia. A lively and engaging speaker with the rare ability to keep a mixed audience’s attention for hours, teachers bring their students to his events year after year for a reason!

Peter is in-demand as a keynote lecturer for organisations such as the International Baccalaureate Organisation, AHISA, the UNHRC, ISRA, the St James Ethics Centre and the HMC. Peter has appeared on both television and radio, including on the ABC, and has written for newspapers and magazines including The Age and The Tablet.

Several of Peter’s 16 books have been translated into multiple languages and are used by schools from Indonesia to Poland. “Ethics Matters” was published in 2012 “God Matters” in 2013 and “Bible Matters” in 2015, all written with his wife, Charlotte Vardy. Peter’s solo publications include ‘Good and Bad Religion’ (SCM 2010) ‘The Puzzle of Sex’ (SCM 2009) and ‘Kierkegaard’ (SPCK 2008) as well as the earlier “Puzzle of” series for HarperCollins, which still outsell almost everything else in their class over 20 years after publication. Arguing for God, a set of 5 brand new DVD teaching resources was released in 2013.

There is nothing quite like being awoken from a somewhat ordinary Tuesday morning by so many pivotal questions and have them linger… To use an analogy from “The Matrix” you fed us the red pill and caused us to think more seriously than we had previously – forcing us to question all that previously appeared to be straightforward, however frustrating that may be!” 15 year old student
